[livejournal.com profile] lynzie914 asked for my favorite Bela scene(s)/episode, and I was only too happy to oblige.  Beware: Here there be flailing.

Aaaaaahhhh, despite the fact that she’s in so few (sob) episodes, it is incredibly difficult to choose between “Bad Day At Black Rock” and “Red Sky At Morning.”  I think ultimately I have to go with the latter because there’s just more of her in it (although Bela aside, I think “Bad Day” is a better episode; re: it is such a fantastic introduction to her character, and I must acknowledge the perfections of her stand-off with Dean in her apartment and the scene where she shoots Sam).  Things in "Morning" that I adore with every fiber of my being:

+ “You know, when this is over, we should really have angry sex” & Dean’s reaction, gaaahhh.

+ “Never mind.  I’ll just do what I’ve always done.  I’ll deal with it myself.”  Aadlkfjalfjlafjladjflajflaksdf THIS WOMAN.  She knows she fucked up and that she’s screwed, but when they demand to know her secret she doesn’t give them the satisfaction because it might get their sympathy but she doesn’t need their pity, she doesn’t need to explain herself to these men who have made assumptions about her like everyone else in her life.  She digs her own grave in so many ways but her motivations are completely understandable when you know her backstory, and I just love her strength of character so, so much, even if it ends up being her undoing.

+ This is completely shallow, but I freaking love watching Dean hold her in the rain while Sam is conjuring the brother.  I know it’s not romantic, but the fact that he still holds her even though he hates her makes me flail, and I can pretend it’s romantic.

+ Dean: Hey, Bela, how'd you get like this, huh? What, did Daddy not give you enough hugs or something?
Bela: I don't know. Your daddy give you enough? Don't you dare look down your nose at me. You're not better than I am.

THE FORESHADOWING.  Oh god it’s painful.  Lauren’s acting is so great- the way her face just shuts down and how all the humor dies from it.  I love that Bela instantly volleys the question back at him.

+ Dean: You know what, you’re right. I'm not gonna kill her. I think slow torture's the way to go.

BRB CRYING FOREVER.  Because this is also foreshadowing because she’s going to Hell, and he probably did torture her.  I don’t know how much of S4 they already had planned (I’ve read that Dean originally was not supposed to go to Hell and that Sam’s powers would have developed in S3 if not for the strike, but IDK if that’s true since it was on, you know, the Internet), so maybe the line about torture is pure coincidence, but even if it is, it’s really fucking great coincidental foreshadowing.  And fucking awful, of course.  *FLINGS SELF OFF NEAREST CLIFF*

+ “You do this out of vengeance and obsession. You're a stone's throw from being a serial killer.”  OH LOOK WHO UNDERSTOOD DEAN AND SAM BETTER THAN DEAN AND SAM DID.  Hiya, later!seasons!Dean, do you have anything you’d like to say?

+ “I didn’t want you thinking.  You’re not very good at that.”  HEEEEEEE she’s just so snarky.  How many people on this show, let alone women, give Dean crap?  And she just does it over and over.

+ Bela “fainting” into his arms and him calling her his wife and carrying her- MY HEART.  Like again, I know it’s not romantic in the slightest, but as with the rain scene, I CAN PRETEND.

+ Bela’s ingenuity and quick thinking when getting the guard to give her and her “husband” more privacy and the guard’s reaction when he sees Dean- HAHAHAHAHA.

+ How gorgeous is Bela in this episode?  Enough said.

+ The look that Bela gives Dean after he says he got a hand of glory at the end of his Thai massage.  It’s so- indulgent almost?  I read it as she thinks he’s childish but is also genuinely amused.  And he looks so embarrassed!  Embarrassed by Bela!  Gah.

+ “You’re so damaged.” / “Takes one to know one” and her smile.  *wibbles*  THEY WERE SUCH PERFECT FOILS, I HATE YOU, SHOW, I HATE YOU.

+ Bela: Well, it was in a tow-away zone.
Dean: No, it wasn’t!
Bela: It was when I finished with it.
HEEEEE, she messed with the Impala.  And the way Dean almost has a heart attack and Sam freaks out over him- omg it’s adorable.

+ “On silk sheets, rolling naked in money” and DEAN’S FACE.  He’s just like, yeah, all right, I can get on board with that.  Why did you never get on board with that.

+ “Can I shoot her?” / “Not in public.”  LOLOLOL.

This episode has some issues for sure (the icky Gert/Sam stuff, for one) but no more than any other SPN episode, if you ask me, so I hate that it gets all this terrible flack.  Is it the Bela show?  Yes, in some ways.  Are there other characters who get their own episodes without getting half the amount of backlash?  Um hi, haaave you met Bobby and Crowley?  So screw fandom and its misogynistic hatred of this fabulous woman who dared to be just as cunning and amoral and conniving as some of the most beloved male characters.  This episode is awesome.

OH YAY! I WAS SO EXCITED FOR THIS DAY AND YOU DID NOT DISAPPOINT IN THE LEAST.

(And I totally agree. I probably favor "Bad Day at Black Rock" overall as an episode when you disregard characters, but as Bela centric, "Red Sky at Morning" defenitly wins.)

Now let me try not to babble and fill up this whole thing with all your wonderful points and just repeat things back to you. Which I will probably do anyways...

+Ahhhh, the angry sex that never happened but totally should have happened. And I love Dean's reaction to it. Because he's totally used to being the one to say things like that, and Bela totally throws him off his game, and its all so perfect. I LOVE IT.

+She digs her own grave in so many ways but her motivations are completely understandable when you know her backstory, and I just love her strength of character so, so much, even if it ends up being her undoing.

YES, YES, YES! I love this about her character. She is so strong, so self-reliant and independant and it isn't because she wants to be, a choice she made, its because she has to be, because trust isn't an option for her, it never has been. Its because the world has never done a damn thing for her and she doesn't need the Winchester's pity to get help, she'll just figure it out like she's done all those times before. Bela has always been the one to figure it out, to make the best of a bad situation. Its literally been built into her. And its awful and wonderful at the same time.

+ This is completely shallow, but I freaking love watching Dean hold her in the rain while Sam is conjuring the brother.

I love this too. I always like to think of it as that whole, thin line between love and hate. Its probably more, we're trying to save her, we can't do that if she's dead, but whatever, he was holding her close, in the rain. That's a romantic scene right there. Ask any movie fan. LOL.

+THE FORESHADOWING. Oh god it’s painful. Lauren’s acting is so great- the way her face just shuts down and how all the humor dies from it. I love that Bela instantly volleys the question back at him.

The foreshadowing they built into Bela's character is SO perfect. Like its all there, its almost like how DIDN'T we see it once you know everything. But at the time, it was like such a gut punch of a realization, that everything was there all along. You just had to put the pieces together. Something that Dean and Sam never did either.

And yes, I love how she doesn't let it effect her, how she changes the subject, turns it around on him, makes it about something else. Because that's what and who Bela is. She's not just strong, but she's made herself into someone else. A con and that means she can con you, change the subject without you even realizing it, until its too late. And IDK I just love that about her too.

+ “You do this out of vengeance and obsession. You're a stone's throw from being a serial killer.”

I love how Bela (who barely knows the Winchesters at this point) knows them better than they know themselves. Knows that they aren't special snowflakes, she's met hunters before and there's always a tragic backstory in there somewhere that lead them to this. But it doesn't make them less of killers. She, she gets paid to do what she does and she doesn't act like its noble or she's the hero of the story. She knows who she is. Its Dean and Sam that need to figure it out.

+ “I didn’t want you thinking. You’re not very good at that.” HEEEEEEE she’s just so snarky. How many people on this show, let alone women, give Dean crap? And she just does it over and over.

Yes, I love her snarky side and sharp wit and how she's always prepared for Dean and he's never prepared for her. The show pretty much only let's demons fill this role typically, so Bela's special that they actually let a human foil/sometimes teammate do it.

+ Bela’s ingenuity and quick thinking when getting the guard to give her and her “husband” more privacy and the guard’s reaction when he sees Dean- HAHAHAHAHA

I LOVE when the waiter sees Dean. I giggle no matter how many times I've seen it. It just makes me laugh. And Dean's confused face and Bela not even bothering to explain. I just love it all.

+How gorgeous is Bela in this episode? Enough said.

She's compltely gorogous. Though I'm biased and will say that of all episodes she's in. ;D Though for me, my actual favorite look for her is at the end when she gives the boys the money so she doesn't owe them anything. I love her in that black leather jeacket. (I also love her in the brown leather trench coat at the beginning.) I might just like her in leather coats...

+“You’re so damaged.” / “Takes one to know one” and her smile. *wibbles* THEY WERE SUCH PERFECT FOILS

YES! THE LOOKS THEY GIVE EACH OTHER. THE BEAUTIFUL LOOKS AS THEIR EYES MEET. THERE IS A CONNECTION IN THAT MOMENT WHERE THEY UNDERSTAND MORE FULLY THAN THEY DO UNTIL PRETTY MUCH THE END OF S3. And its so perfect. And those lines, SO PERFECT AND SO TRUE. They are damaged (though damaged in differnt ways) and damage can attract damage in different ways, like foils, or love interest. Or both. And to think of all the places it could have gone is just so sad.

HEEEEE, she messed with the Impala. And the way Dean almost has a heart attack and Sam freaks out over him- omg it’s adorable.

I love that she knows where to hit right where it hurts for Dean. So much that Sam seriously freaks out like you said and Dean who is calm in the face of monsters is hyperventilating. And then Bela walks up all calm and smiles. Its so wonderful. Childish and yet not at the same time.

+ “On silk sheets, rolling naked in money” and DEAN’S FACE. He’s just like, yeah, all right, I can get on board with that. Why did you never get on board with that.

LOL, Bela, she so easily plays him. But Dean lets her too. Because yeah, he can picture it and its a good picture it. AND YES WHY DID HE NEVER GET ON BOARD WITH THAT. AND IF HE DID AND WE JUST DIDN'T SEE, WELL WHY DIDN'T WE GET TO SEE IT DAMN IT?

+ “Can I shoot her?” / “Not in public.”

Another exchange that never fails to make me giggle.

+this fabulous woman who dared to be just as cunning and amoral and conniving as some of the most beloved male characters.

Such a wonderful description of her and comparision to male kind of counterparts and how the fandom loves them. Bela is everything I love in a foil for Dean (and Sam but we saw less of that, it was usually either Dean or Dean/Sam) and it was wonderful. She brought something unique to the show that we hadn't seen before. She was a human who not only outsmarted the Winchesters but did it time and time again and almost never with violence. (She shot Sam once, but honestly it was more to make a point, it was never meant to hurt or kill him, otherwise he would have been dead.) Bela was amazing, human with human problems and human skills and tricks and wants and a past. She was a woman in the supernautral world who survived on her own cunning and survived well, lived well, with more money than she probably knew what to do with. And all of this while trying to figure out a way out of her deal on her own.

She was a beautiful character from start to beginning. And no one will ever convince me otherwise.

(It also doesn't hurt that Lauren Cohen played her, because you know, Lauren Cohen. Never seen her in a part I don't love.)
