Supernatural: Everybody Loves A Clown
2x02: Everybody Loves A Clown
Thoughts I had while watching the episode:
-The end of the “Then” credits is really well done with the accelerating ticking.
-I was never scared of clowns as a child, but TV shows lie BtVS have made me wary of them on-screen, which is why I did not watch this last night before bed as I wanted to.
-What is this child doing? She looks like she’s at least nine, maybe ten or eleven. What kind of moron child lets a stranger inside in the middle of the night?
-I can understand both boys’ mindsets, Sam’s desire for revenge and frustration with Dean for not talking and Dean’s more rational I’m-taking-this-one-day-at-a-time-and-solving-the-problems-I-actually-can approach.
-I’m finally meeting all these secondary characters I see so much about.
-I was about to be annoyed that Dean disarmed Ellen so easily, and then she punched him, and I like her!
-Whoops, that was Jo, not Ellen.
-It’s been two minutes, and I’m pretty sure I ship Dean/Jo…
-That was a very male gaze-y shot of Jo’s ass. :(
-Dean, I am proud of you for not finishing your pick-up line.
-Jo, I am pleased that you saw through him.
-I sense some pent-up aggression toward Sam on Dean’s part in the car. Can’t wait to find out what John told him.
-The parents lying in bed and the son waking his father up, oh no, he’s gonna be like, “look, here’s the clown!” Aaaaaahhhh, this is creepy!!
-Called it.
-“A couple of folks got themselves murdered.” Why are the victims always blamed for getting themselves hurt? Why not, “A few people were murdered”?
-Hmm, Mr. Cooper looks like his daddy…maybe he’s the bad guy? He is his “daddy”?
-Huh, I actually like that Mr. Cooper is trying to talk them into not running away from their lives to join the circus.
-“No, I don’t have a problem at all.” Oh, yes, Dean is definitely being passive aggressive.
-Is this the first time we’ve seen the boys make money through legitimate/normal means?
-Nice excuse about writing a book about ghosts.
-Cooper could be the clown in a whole lot of makeup.
-I’m going to assume that the clown is somehow enchanting these kids and they’re not all that stupid.
-I think John and Ellen had a thing.
-“You ever notice John had a falling-out with just about everybody.” Nice.
-Ooh, or maybe Cooper is the red herring and the blind guy is the clown.
-In the boys’ situation (trapped and separated in the funhouse) I WOULD BE TERRIFIED.
-SAMMY. Oh goodness me, Jared is amazing.
-Oh Dean.
Moments that made me giggle inside:
-Dean unintentionally insulting the blind guy and the dwarf.
-The conversation about seeing a clown/seeing the skeleton in the funhouse.
-“I can’t believe we keep talking about clowns.”
Moments that made me actually LOL:
-“Oh God, please let that be a rifle.”
-“At least I’m not afraid of flying!”
“Planes crash!”
“And apparently clowns kill!”
-“Sam’s got a thing for the bearded lady.”
-“I gotta go…over there…right now.”
Overall Thoughts:
Is this considered one of the better episodes? Because I really freaking loved it. The monster was really creepy and creatively done (except for the way the boys defeated him, which seemed a bit hokey to me; steam messed up his invisibility? It seems contrived, although to be fair, I don’t know how else they could have gotten him). Jo, Ellen, and Ash were all interesting additions to the supporting cast (okay, mostly Jo and Ash; I don’t care about Ellen much).
Dean/Jo has potential. She didn’t do much after her first scene, but there is potential here (she punched him in the middle of his patronizing comment! It made me GLEEFUL). She could turn out to be a two-dimensional love interest, but on the other hand, she hasn’t been a cliché so far. While she does warm up to “ladies’ man” Dean almost immediately, I think it’s important to note that he was never actually a jerk to her in the first place, and she only warms up to him once her mother approves him. It’s not like he was a “Nice Guy” whom she fell for only because he was hot/sexy/suave. So yes…if Dean/Jo happens, I am there.
The Dean & Sam interactions were great. Jared’s heartbroken speech about John at the end (and how he started crying when Dean first called him on it earlier) was fantastic. The last scene with Dean wrecking the car was also heartbreaking.
I like Sam quite a bit more than I used to, but episodes like this, where my Favorite Boy is almost, almost a tie and yet Dean edges out Sam by a hair, remind me that I just really, really love Jared’s acting. Half the time that Sam goes up in my estimation is probably due more to Jared than to actual characterization.
I’m a bit disappointed by Sam’s disinterest in college, but that’s just my own personal taste- the characterization itself is very logical and makes a ton of sense. I’m more disappointed that revenge seems to have become his prime focus again. I guess we’ll see in episodes to come if that sticks, since revenge is understandable given how recently John died. With John dead, there also isn’t really anyone to be a foil against Dean, so even if Sam would still choose family over revenge, without John to provoke him we might not see that choice actively made as often.
I’m also wary of Dean’s animosity toward Sam and the possibility that John’s secret may have made him less devoted to Sam, but a) that characterization also makes sense and b) I’m sure it will pass.
I want to watch more!!
Purely Subjective Rating:
4.5/5
