Supernatural: Something Wicked

Notes I took while watching the episode:
-6 minutes in, this already reminds me of “Killed By Death” (not that that’s a bad thing).
-Our boys look good in suits.

Moments that made me giggle inside:
-“I’m the oldest, which means I’m always right.” Hell yes.
-Sam’s dismay about the ‘bikini inspector’ title.
-The little boy with his ‘queen’ comments.

Moments that made me actually LOL:
-N/A...but mostly b/c I was super tired, not b/c it wasn't funny.

Overall Thoughts:
I loved it! In episodes to come when Dean acts like an immature, horny, sexist jerk, this is the kind of the episode I’m going to pull out of the memory banks to remind me why I love this man. The scene where kid!Dean gives kid!Sam his Lucky Charms makes me go aldkjfa;ldkjfadkj. My heartstrings would probably be twanging even if I weren’t an oldest sibling who could relate, but the fact is, I do relate so much to Dean for always having to be responsible and sometimes resenting that responsibility and that sibling, even if you would simultaneously do anything for him/her. I think we got a decent reaction from Sam, too- he seemed stunned to realize just how much Dean has actually done for him, and he acknowledged it without getting maudlin. Dean, of course, brushed off any emotional conversation about it, and while that makes sense for now, I hope in the future he can soften enough to acknowledge Sam’s gratefulness and love in return.

From everything I’ve seen of him, I still don’t like John. He’s a jerk for expecting a ten-year-old to be able to care for a six-year-old for half a week without getting frustrated and wanting to act, you know, like a ten-year-old. He’s a jerk for only seeing Dean’s mistakes instead of the devotion Dean shows 95% of the time (arguably, John’s anger makes sense in context b/c the incident with the Shtriga has just happened, but from what Dean said about dad always looking at him differently, I don’t have faith that John ever got the stick out of his ass and acknowledged Dean’s efforts). He’s a jerk for all the crap he’s pulled with the boys this season and for sending Dean off to fix his “failure.” You’re probably thinking, lol, tell me how you really feel, but bad parenting is one of the least forgivable character flaws in my book.  I think the only reason I’m going to care about his upcoming death is because of how much it will tear Dean apart. This is essentially my reaction to Joyce, too. I dislike Joyce, but her death upsets me for Buffy’s sake.

The Shtriga was a neat villain b/c a) not a ghost, b) caused all sorts of juicy back story, and c) it was a non-Western mythological villain. I thought at first that it was a riff on Baba Yaga, but apparently the Shtriga is an Albanian legend. According to Wikipedia, the Shtriga is usually a woman who has miscarried or is infertile and has turned evil from envy; given SPN’s women problems, I guess it’s a good thing it dumbed down the legend so as to not have another woman-turned-evil story a la the pilot.

Both child actors, kid!Dean and Michael, were quite good. This episode highlighted, again, that Dean is excellent with children, much better than he is with adults. He’s a character whom I would really like to see thrown unexpectedly into a paternal role (a la Angel in S3, only, you know, better). It wouldn’t have to be a baby, as I doubt Dean’s ability to handle that with grace, but if he suddenly found himself in charge of, say, a ten-year-old, I imagine he’d complain a lot about it but actually be quite good at it.

In sum, “Something Wicked” is the kind of episode that explains why I watch this show (i.e. a good villain is cool but mostly it’s about the brothers) and makes me want to watch more.

YAY. When I commented that I was "interested to read your thoughts," what I really meant was YAY FAVORITE EP OF S1 LET ME SHOW YOU IT. (Well, 'favorite' as in top five, anyway.) I adore this ep for all the reasons you state - kid!Dean being so selfless and dedicated, backstory yay, Dean's scenes with Michael (yes to Dean interacting with children), plus Sam's reaction to the whole thing. I especially liked when Sam apologizes for giving Dean so much grief about following John's orders - that's in this ep, right?

Plus, the scary old lady in the hotel room! And the really fabulous, whimsical background score!

Yes. Def one of my favorites of the season.

Sam's apology was quite excellent, and goodness gracious does this help to explain why Dean is so rigid about following John's orders/rules.

Bwaha, the old lady was fabulous (and the subsequent twist with the doctor being the shtriga was clever) . The boys' expressions about turning the crucifix over were great. Such a solid episode overall. :D
