Supernatural: Born Under A Bad Sign
I did not end up catching up with SPN reviews the way I wanted to over break, but I did watch a few episodes this week, and I'm just going to post current reviews. I'll still try to write the missing ones at some point because I'm anal-retentive and I don't like leaving a gap; I have all my episodes notes and the outlines for reviews, I just...never wrote them because of midterms and temporarily losing interest in the show (although for some reason I did write a review for "Croatoan").
2x14: Born Under A Bad Sign
Thoughts I had while watching the episode:
-Heh, I like that Dean took the candy from the gas station.
-Also, I don’t blame the employee for being pissy and extorting Dean.
-Sam is being kind of a moron. He really doesn’t know his own brother very well if he thinks Dean can kill him. Also, why would you have Dean shoot him in a motel room where there would quickly be witnesses on the scene and it would look like cold-blooded murder?
-Justin Timberlake? Was he still even doing concerts back then??
-Jo!! :D I did not know she was in this episode.
-I would enjoy watching Jo kick Sam’s ass.
-Jared is doing a really good job of being a creepy asshole.
-Jo found Dean!! “Don’t be a baby!” AAAH, IT’S LIKE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!!!
-You are such an ungrateful little son of a bitch, Dean (for telling Jo he’ll tie her to the post if she follows him).
-“I’ll call you later.” “No, you won’t.” NOOOOOOOOOOO, I know (I think) that line is reused later.
-Woot, go Bobby! (holy water in beer)
-“You like full on had a girl inside you for a whole week.” Oh, Dean…
Moments that made me giggle inside:

-“I didn’t wanna scare you.” “Well, bang up job on that.”
Overall Thoughts:
After my three-month hiatus, this was not the best episode to reinvigorate my passion for SPN. I’m getting a little tired of the angsty Sam-might-turn-evil! storyline, especially since it’s a given that Dean’s not going to kill him. We also had a similar version of this story already in "Devil's Trap" when John wanted Sam to kill him. It’s nice to see Dean in his emotional big brother role and Jensen’s expressions were even more heartbreaking than usual when Meg was hitting him at the end, but Dean’s reaction is nothing unexpected, you know?
Part of the reason I held off watching SPN for so long was because I knew the episode was about Sam losing his memories (and possibly having gone dark), and I didn’t care for more of that arc; it’s getting a little boring and repetitive, for the reasons mentioned above. I guess I’m glad that Sam didn’t kill Steve Wandell of his own accord, but it might have made for a more interesting story if he had fallen prey to his “inner demons” rather than to an actual demon. All in all, I’m looking forward to getting back to MOW stories (and the rest of this season looks like it has some pretty creative ones; oh, except I’m not looking forward to theMia werewolf one because I saw it on TNT several years ago, and I remember its depressing ending).
The highlights of this episode, IMO, were the exceptional acting and, of course, Jo. Jared was amazing as the demon, and I was even more impressed when I found out it was Meg because the personality really came through at the end and made a lot more sense- for example, the creepy way he sing-songed, “My daddy shot your dad through the head” to Jo was very Meg-like, in retrospect. I’m not sure the transition was as smooth as it was for some of the YED hosts, but Jared pulled off Meg’s taunting and hate very well.
Jensen was even more moving than usual. His fear at the end when Meg was torturing him and telling him he couldn’t save Sam was very palpable and upsetting. Dean sometimes feels a little one note because when he’s not womanizing or hunting, he’s always brooding about family, but at least Jensen does that note really, really well. Alona Tal was also brilliant, especially when Sam was harassing her, and oh my gosh, do I love Jo. She was obviously scared but didn’t have a breakdown, and she both pleaded and fought back, which I think is a realistic reaction; I loved the way she kept her cool when the demon was taunting her about her father afterward. I am going to be so fucking pissed when she’s killed, and I’m going to make up lots of head!canon where she and Dean (and sometimes Sam) hunt together and then, years later, have beautiful blonde (maybe mpreg) babies (after the way he treated her in this episode, I’m not sure Dean deserves Jo, but if she wants him, she can have him).
I can understand why Dean didn’t want Jo to come because he didn’t want to be responsible for her, but he was really fucking rude to her, and he should have let her come anyway because she’s an adult who can make her own choices and she probably wanted closure after being harassed by someone who looked like her friend. My little brother has more emotional maturity than you, Dean, and believe me, that’s saying something.
I also liked seeing Meg again, although I like her better as, you know, Meg. Oh, and Bobby’s part was nice, too, although I would have preferred if Jo had showed up at the end to help.
I think those are all my main thoughts.

And yeah, I recall the Sam-might-turn-evil "arc" getting awfully old around about this time. But I promise he gets way more to do later. Like, S3? Big breakthroughs for the Sam development. And then moreso in S4. And S5. And S6!!! (Yes, Sam in S6 gets exclamation points.)
Seriously, you are almost to the point when Sam gets good (and his hair gets bad).

But omg, his hair is awful. Not as bad as Cordelia's hair got in AtS but still awful. I keep rewatching "Shut Up, Dr. Phil," and I never fail to notice it.
Yes, you get to bug me! I appreciate it! I did go back to it, although I still have a few thousand more words to write for Chap. 2. However, if at any point you want what I do have so far (which is about 5,000 words), I would be happy to email it to you. I can't promise it's exciting because it's very much "minute-by-minute-emergency-day-in-the-life-of," but it's yours if you want it. The minutiae is why it's slow-going and I'm having trouble writing it; most of the story as I have it planned is going to be more vignette-like and emotionally introspective, but the first few chapters, where they're all "what the fuck is going on?!?" has to, for obvious reasons, be more plot-oriented. I'm much more enthusiastic about later chapters, but I obviously have to get through the beginning first.
