This is actually one of my least favorite eps of S2, because I just can't connect to it emotionally, for some reason. I agree it'd be a hard ep to come back in on. (But, yay for you coming back!)
And yeah, I recall the Sam-might-turn-evil "arc" getting awfully old around about this time. But I promise he gets way more to do later. Like, S3? Big breakthroughs for the Sam development. And then moreso in S4. And S5. And S6!!! (Yes, Sam in S6 gets exclamation points.)
Seriously, you are almost to the point when Sam gets good (and his hair gets bad).
