Supernatural: Wendigo

gryfndor_godess Notes I took while watching:
-Finn? Cory Monteith, is that you? Wow, you really don’t age. Aw, Finn just died. ☹
-Did we really just waste three minutes on red shirts, harsh breathing, and a lame ‘the monster’s so scary we won’t even show you it’ vibe?
-Oh hey, Callum Keith Rennie, I recognize your name in the credits. You’re the creepy Cylon.
-Yay Haley for demanding the boys’ ID.
-I don’t look forward to an episode about a ‘skinwalker.’ I picture lots of flayed Warrens but without Alyson Hannigan to make up for it.
-Why hello there, Leoben.
-That’s a much more effective scary scene in the cave.
-CKR, do you always play creeps?
-Nice dilemma between the boys about finding John vs. fighting evil. I like the reversal in Sam’s mindset since the pilot, how he’s the one consumed now with finding John. And Dean’s speech about their family being irrevocably screwed up so they may as well help others is actually pretty nice. He should show this sincerity more often.
-That’s a disgusting myth. Better villain than last episode, though.
-I really like John’s book and how much Dean values it. I like how hodge-podge it seems and the idea of John compiling it over the years whenever he learned something new. It reminds me of Katniss’s memory book, only, um, evil.
-Magic circle! Magic circle! Draw a magic circle!
-How many times are they going to use the blood falling on face trope?
-Can we get the flame torch ready, please?
-The Wendigo looks like an overgrown Gollum.
-Oh, Dean’s face when she kisses his cheek. I could fall for him.
Moments that made me giggle inside:
-“Inside the magic circle?”
-“Must you cheapen the moment?” “Yeah.”
Moments that made me actually LOL:
-“Besides, that’s the most honest I’ve ever been with a woman. Ever.”
Overall Thoughts:
I was mostly bored during this episode, which is probably not the reaction intended given the amount of screaming and running through the forest. However, that was mostly what made it boring (and not very scary, tbh). This epi didn’t have as many quips and one-liners as the pilot and seemed, if possible, to rely even more on horror. It certainly had quite the bag of horror tropes, from the Foolishly Brave And Headstrong Girl Whom the Heroes Must Save to the Creepy Jerk Whom You Know Will Die Because He Laughed at the Heroes to the Child Who Shouldn’t Be in This Situation And Must Be Protected. Plus the obligatory campers’ deaths and off-screen kills.
On the topic of our boys, I was more interested in Dean this time around, both because of JA’s nuanced facial expressions and because I liked his interaction with Haley. He comes across as a jerk most of the time with women, but he looked genuinely lonely and sorry to see her go at the end, which makes me think that part of his asshattery is an intentional façade- he doesn’t want to get close to any woman because he can’t afford to with his lifestyle. Which of course makes me really want a Dean romance but, sigh, I know that’s not in the cards. I am starting to understand why there are so many crossover Dean/Buffy stories. If you had to pair her with someone outside of BtVS (i.e., not Spike), I could see the potential.
I don’t understand why John is being evasive. I find such behavior obnoxious, which means I am bored rather than intrigued. Also, if he knew about the wendigo well enough in advance to leave cryptic coordinates for his sons, why didn't he finish off the monster himself before it could, oh I don't know, eat more people? Hopefully there will turn out to be a good reason for his evasion (DON’T TELL ME IF THERE IS).
It wasn’t really my type of episode, but it didn’t do anything to put me off the show, so that’s good. I’m looking forward to seeing how the boys start their search and adapt to finding monsters of their own to hunt now that they don’t have John’s guidance.
