Notes I took while watching the episode:
-I hope we’re not going to have blood coming out of all orifices again.
-“The man can barely work a toaster.” HAHAHAHA, if Dean is Spike, John is Angel.
-I wonder if it’s deliberate that Sam mentions method acting, confusing Dean, and then Dean brings up a slew of movies- Dean feels self-conscious and wants to show off his movie-related trivia?
-Oh, yuck, we’re going to see a bunch of rotting corpses from the riot, aren’t we.
-“It’s like we’re in a movie.” Moron. If it’s a movie, then it’s a horror movie, and if it’s a horror movie, you’re going to die.
-This girl is either evil/possessed or stupid.
-Could we maybe not split up?
-Nice resentment in Sam’s voice when he says hunting is kind of their job.
-Remember the policeman? Not all of the spirits are just trying to communicate.
-So many references to The Shining.
-Yeah, that totally wasn’t Dean on the phone.
-I like that the girl knows how to use the gun. I hope she’s not evil.

Moments that made me giggle inside:
-“See that attitude right there? That’s why I always got the extra cookie.”
-“Do me a favor. Pay attention. Next time someone says a place is haunted, don’t go in.”
-“Dude, she kissed me. I’m scarred for life.”
-Sam telling Kat to calm down.
-“I had a crappy guidance counselor.”
-If we make it out of here alive, we’re so breaking up.”

Moments that made me actually LOL:
-“You’re not gonna try to kill me, are you?” “No.” “Good. ‘Cause that would be awkward.”

Overall Thoughts:
This was a very solid episode with some hefty and realistic character development. The tension over John finally simmered over, and both boys’ reactions made sense and were heartbreaking in their own ways. Dean is so fixated on doing what John wants that he really does miss the big picture. I actually think Sam is in the right (which is not to say that I think Dean is purposely obtuse; I think, if anything, he’s misguided), and I hope he gives John shit when they finally meet up. I sympathize with both boys very strongly, perhaps for the first time.

I liked the end with Sam feeling such remorse and claiming what he said wasn’t true (which I don’t think is true, but I think Sam honestly believes it to be true) and Dean brushing it off. I think we’ve seen enough of Dean’s vulnerabilities by now to know that he’s not as unperturbed by it as he pretends to be, and I hope we do come back to Sam’s revelations (just as we should come back to shifter!Dean’s revelations; I like that we have a parallel situation going on now, btw). I expect Sam will feel guilty enough about this that he’ll tone down the resentment for a few episodes, which will be nice.

I also thought the acting was great in this episode. For the first time I really liked Jared. I think he pulled off the anger and resentment almost perfectly. I actually like his evil!acting much more than Jensen’s in “Skin.” I forgot to ask in that review, but what did y’all think of Jensen’s shifter!Dean? I was thoroughly unblown away by it. He came across as thuggish rather than creepy (obviously the torture was creepy in and of itself, but I don’t think Jensen gave it that extra level of ick that, frex, David Boreanaz so easily gives to Angelus). That could be mostly the script’s fault, though, as I don’t think the writing was particularly stellar. I’ve grown fond enough of Jensen to assume he could play evil better with better material, and I think Jared nailed this episode.

The only part that puzzled me was Sam’s meeting with the psychiatrist. When the psych probed about his road trip and Sam was quite obviously floundering, I couldn’t tell if Sam was actually floundering or just trying to be vague. Jared seemed to play it as floundering, which doesn’t jive (in my mind, at least) with Sam’s usually suave lying abilities. OTOH, maybe I’m conflating Sam and Dean since Dean is the one who always turns to lying and Sam tries to stick to the truth if he can. *shrugs* In any case, that scene was kind of awkward and not because of the subject matter.

Aaannnddd John called! I predict that he will want Sam to keep it a secret from Dean (DON’T TELL ME, PLEASE).

Random Kudos:
-Way to go Sam for owning up to what he said and apologizing instead of taking the easy way out and pretending he had no memory of it (cough*Xander*cough).
-Way to go writers for picking up the John ball so quickly after last episode and upping the ante.

Purely Subjective Rating:
4/5
