If anyone new is reading these reviews because of
snickfic ’s shout-out today, I just want to say welcome, and don’t hesitate to comment just because you don’t know me. I love discussing SPN and making new friends. ☺
Notes I took while watching the episode:
-This opening just makes me sad.
-Glad we finally know how long Sam and Jess dated.
-I like Sam’s teasing of Dean as they dress in suits.
-That actually wasn’t a bad sex scene. Kind of hot. And really charged fight beforehand.
-Yay, Dean, for getting the mom to fess up.
-The mom’s story is really moving.
-Sam’s grin when Dean and Cassie kiss is adorable.
-They find the truck in the swamp that easily. How convenient.
-Burn the truck, too! It’s like the hook.
Moments that made me giggle inside:
-“Don’t leave the house, please.”
-“Maybe? Maybe?”
Moments that made me actually LOL:
-“You loved her. “Oh God.”
Overall Thoughts:
I actually enjoyed this episode. I was not expecting to given that I knew the villain was a racist truck. I’m not sure about the propriety of the premise in the first place, but given that they did it, I think they did it fairly well. I thought the mom’s story was both enthralling and moving (and I’m glad she gave Dean that nasty look after he thoughtlessly asked why they didn’t go to the police). I liked the revelation about the mayor, and I liked the African American man who talked to the boys when they were pretending to be from the insurance company.
And now the other major part of the episode…Cassie. I am mostly ambivalent about her character. Her gutsiness at the beginning is nice (though cliché) but after that her role devolved into SO-angst. I like the revelation that Dean has been in love before. I think it explains, partly, why even though we see him flirt all the time, we’ve never actually seen him hook up. Jensen’s acting was quite good (and Jared was really cute when he kept sneaking glances at them and teasing Dean). I can also sympathize with both Dean and Cassie re: the break-up. His feelings of betrayal make so much sense (and how cruelly delicious is it that the one time he confessed their secret he was dumped? I hope we come back to that angst), but I can also see her side. I probably would have been just as incredulous. I’ve actually been in a similar position before where my boyfriend was giving every indication that he wanted to break up with me, but I had to say the actual words. It was very unpleasant.
The scene where she and Dean fought was handled well in showing us both sides of the story but not hitting us over the head with it. The progression also made logical sense as opposed to “the audience needs to know these things, here say these random lines.” I can’t decide how I feel about her pragmatism at the end, though. On the one hand…I guess it makes sense? She does seem like a no-nonsense person. OTOH, she and Dean were getting along really well, so it feels like a cheap way to break them up. I also disliked Dean’s non-reaction to Sam’s question about whether he ever thought about giving up hunting for the right person. His little smile seemed to indicate he thought the question was stupid, but that doesn’t really jive with his love for Cassie. Though he did ultimately choose hunting, he certainly didn’t do it with a carefree heart.
Overall I thought the episode was a good vehicle (hah! pun!) for Dean’s background, and the truck plotline didn’t bother me too much. If I’m missing something blatantly offensive about the episode, though, I would like to know.
Purely Subjective Rating:
4/5
