My favorite princess is obviously Belle, but since I’m not going to just repeat myself from yesterday, I’ll talk about my second favorite, Rapunzel (FWIW, ‘princess’ to me means the traditional six plus Tiana and Rapunzel).

When I found out that Disney was renaming their newest movie Tangled instead of Rapunzel and framing it from the hero’s perspective because they wanted to attract little boys as well as little girls (because only $90 million was a disappointing haul for Princess and the Frog), I was afraid they would completely sacrifice the story of Rapunzel herself and reduce her to nothing more than a damsel in distress. Fortunately, my fears were completely unfounded. Rapunzel is an utter joy to watch, whether she’s daydreaming and being queen of the arts and crafts in her tower or fighting off bad guys with her handy frying pan. She’s courageous, friendly, funny, imaginative, resourceful, heroic, and adorable, and I’m so thrilled by how Disney princesses have evolved into true feminist characters.
