Supernatural: Salvation

I figured out a few episodes ago part of the reason I’d been averse to Sam (whom I thought was Dean, prior to starting the show) for years: Jared reminds me of Ben from BtVS, and I do not like Ben.

Thoughts I had while watching the episode:
-I like this opening song during the “Previously on…” sequence! I normally don’t care for the music on SPN, but this is fun, even if it really confused me the whole time and I kept pausing Megavideo to see if an ad had popped up and started playing…
-Well that’s an awful lot of weapons for a man of the cloth.
-I like that John researched Jessica’s death. I know it’s a completely pragmatic thing to do for the case, but it still gets him father points in my book.
-…Am I supposed to know who Caleb is?
-Heh, I like John’s glove compartment of fake IDs and badges.
-If I were Monica, I would be creeped out right now. Superficial note, she is really pretty.
-I suddenly really want Sam to be able to get married and be a father, because I think he’d be really good at it. I want Dean to get tossed unexpectedly into a father situation, possibly with a child who's not biologically his, but I want Sam to have an organic father situation.
-YAY DEAN FOR STANDING UP FOR YOURSELF! (about being unable to reach John)
-I like Meg. It bugs me that the only recurring female character is Evil (not to mention Sexually Depraved), and I wouldn’t call her a three-dimensional villain, but I enjoy watching her on-screen.
-“Either that or she’s possessed by one. Doesn’t really matter.” Um. Okay, yes, yes it kind of does matter. I mean, we the audience know she’s not possessed, but what if she were an innocent, possessed woman? I suppose “doesn’t really matter” applies to the greater good, but John’s callousness about the possibility still perturbs me.
-Jeffrey Dean Morgan is impressing me with his speech about wanting Sam to go to school and Dean to have a home; he hadn’t really up until now.
-Am I going to need to watch the season finale immediately after this? Oh no, ‘cause I know how that ends, more-or-less, and then I’d have to watch S2x01, too…
-Is he creating holy water? ‘Cause that’s pretty nifty.
-DeanDeanDeanDeanDean talking Sam off the ledge FLAIL!
Moments that made me giggle inside:
-John’s expression when Meg says she can see where his boys get their good looks from.
Moments that made me actually LOL:
-“I’m so not in the mood for this, I’ve just been shot!”
Overall Thoughts:
This episode was fantastic!! I don’t have any Deep Thoughts about it at the moment, mostly just flailing “I” statements:
-I really liked Sam’s scene with Monica, even if it would totally be creepy in real life. Sam’s horror and heartbreak is so palpable- Jared hits it out of the park like never before. His breakdown at the end was frustrating to watch but completely understandable.
-As was Dean’s reaction. Oh Dean. Half the time he’s stoic and the other half he’s acting like a careless playboy, but he feels just as much as Sam does. Like Buffy, he hides his pain so as not to burden others with it, and when he lets go and admits what he wants/needs, it is beautiful and heartbreaking. And the fact that he is more than willing to forgo the fight if it means keeping his family alive is just- oh, just perfect. Besides the obvious emotional reasons why it makes me flail, it also indicates to me that Dean actually doesn’t need to be fighting to be happy; he could be happy with a normal life if he had his family, and that’s pretty much always my end goal for beleaguered heroes, that they can have that normal life if they want it (see: why I love the HP epilogue, the raison d’etre for my BtVS fic HEA-verse).
-I actually liked John in this episode, surprisingly enough. He’s finally treating his sons as warriors in their own right. With the holy water trick, we also finally saw some of that resourcefulness and quick-wittedness he supposedly has so much of. I might actually be sad to see him go next episode after the character development we’re finally getting.
-Meg’s first two scenes were enjoyable to watch, if not enjoyable in their actual substance. She’s no Glory, but my standards for SPN villains are pretty low so far, so she’s meeting them. I like how utterly ruthless and sarcastic she is; she reminds me of a more single-minded, cardboard, demonic Lilah Morgan. In her last scene I was pretty much rolling my eyes at her, though. Really, she didn’t see it coming that he was going to shoot her? (actually, I thought she would shoot him, but oh well)
-Hmm hmm hmm, what else…Oh. So I feel a bit guilty for thinking this, like I’m diminishing Cordelia’s pain, but it is a nice change of pace to watch someone have visions without screaming and falling apart afterward. Jared also did that scene very well.
This is something I’ve been thinking for the past few episodes, and now that the season is finally at its end, it’s resonating more strongly with me: the season’s two arcs of finding the demon and reuniting with John have made this seem to me more like a movie, with a beginning, middle, and an end, than a lot of other shows. When John says he wants Sam to go to college and Dean to have a home, that’s what I want, too, and I keep thinking, oh they’re almost there, before I remember that, actually, they’re not going to get a happy ending after (if) they defeat this demon. In fact, they have at least six more seasons of hardship and pain to endure. And while I suppose that should make me glad as a viewer, I really just want to cuddle Dean and Sam and wrap them in a blanket with blondies and cocoa and tell them they never have to fight monsters again.
