Date: 2011-11-15 05:07 am (UTC)As for the Dr. Who movie, I really don't have any feelngs about it. I watch the show currently, but I don't feel the say I would if say, BtVS was going to be remade without Whedon (OH WAIT). I'm reserving judgement for the DW movie until I find out more. Meanwhile, it's been rather amusing to read comments on the articles I've seen. Fandom explosion is always much more entertaining from the outside. *g*

Date: 2011-11-15 04:21 pm (UTC)One of the first things I did was check next semester's academic calendar to see whether I would be at school already. I have already informed certain family members to block off the date. :)
It definitely is, although if fans are really upset, I'll be sympathetic. I don't really understand why they're making a movie, because unlike Star Trek, which is the closest sci-fi phenomenon for comparison, Dr. Who is still on air and successful, so it doesn't need a big-screen reboot; and unlike the successful Trek movies that did come out when series were still running, the Who movie plans to have a whole new Dr., so it won't capitalize on the current character's fan base. Despite not understanding their logic (well, I suppose I understand greed), I'm personally intrigued and kind of looking forward to it. I've tried multiple times to get into Dr. Who but have never been that interested by what I've seen; I might like a movie with new canon more.

Date: 2011-11-15 05:26 am (UTC)That being said, this.....I do not like:
Yates made clear that his movie adaptation would not follow on from the current TV series, but would take a completely fresh approach to the material.
"Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch," he said.
That idea almost makes me more skeptical that this'll ever get made. The whole draw in making Doctor Who movie is that it's a known brand with a built-in fan base - what's the point in doing it if you're rebooting and irritating the fans? And with the show likely still on the air at the time?
At least Buffy's been gone since 2003. I still think the new movie's a terrible idea, but I can kind of understand why the studio might think it's a good one. Though I'm skeptical that that's actually happening, too - the remake doesn't even have it's own wiki page and I can't find any news about it more recently than December 2010.

Date: 2011-11-15 04:29 pm (UTC)*nods* It's not like the Trek reboot, which came when the series had been off the air for several years and canon needed a new injection of life; it's also not like the successful Trek movies that came out when series were airing, because since they plan to have a new Doctor, they won't be capitalizing on the existing characters' fanbase. I've heard that Matt Smith said this was his last season, so maybe BBC is planning on "ending" the show to make way for the movie? That would probably piss off a whole lot of fans, though.

Date: 2011-11-15 05:53 pm (UTC)That was a rumor. Matt said this in an interview:
Smith was asked if he’s going to try and break America, and he said “Hopefully soon. I’ve got another year on Doctor Who, but then I’m going to come and give it a shot and hang out in LA.”
and then clarified a few days later after the internet exploded with this:
“We work very long hours every day for nine months. The schedule is pretty brutal, but I’d never complain about it. I love playing this role, and I don’t want to give it up anytime soon,” he said.

I hope Matt never leaves. He's lovely and weird.
