1x06: Lost Girls:
-Ooh, our first flashback. Unexpected and nice.
-“If you mean me no harm, then you’ll go.” Nina Dobrev’s terror and pain seems so genuine. She’s fantastic.
-Oh my god, you’re loitering outsider her house in the middle of the night. DO NOT TURN INTO EDWARD CULLEN, STEFAN.
-Oh, Matt came to take care of Vicki. <3 (Does anyone know how to make the heart symbol in an entry? The coding I use for making hearts in comments, ♥, mysteriously doesn't work in the entry itself.)
-“The same choice you made?” Ooh, nice one, Elena.
-“Did you thank Katherine?” ELENA IS SUCH A BAMF.
Overall Thoughts:
I wasn’t as absorbed by this episode as I expected to be, considering 1x05’s cliffhanger and all the reveals in this episode, but it had phenomenal acting and some extremely poignant moments, and it’s definitely a game-changing episode.
Before I start stanning Elena/Nina Dobrev and Vicki, I want to give props to Sheriff Forbes and her cohorts. Their first appearance at the Founders Party makes them seem, on the surface, like villains: the Lockwoods aren’t likable, Logan is clearly using Jenna, and Sheriff Forbes didn’t come across too well in her first appearance with Caroline, either; they’re mysterious, lying to Elena, and clearly up to something. However, I think this episode makes them very sympathetic, and while some of them may not be likable (cough*Lockwoods*cough), they’re not bad people. They realize that the town is in danger, and they’re taking steps to do something about it; I don’t fault Logan for shooting Stefan. On a character-level I love how proactive they are, and on a narrative-level, I love that the adults in the town aren’t in the dark; it’s so unique and refreshing that the adults and children are keeping the same secret from each other, thinking that it will protect them. Sheriff Forbes’ distress when she realized that Vicki may have been one of the victims and the way she said that she went to school with Mrs. Donovan made me feel for her so much; it’s obvious that she just wants to protect the people of Mystic Falls. Eventually there’s probably going to be a showdown pitting the adults against the brothers, but at least for now I can’t see the adults as anything more than misguided (about Stefan) rather than villainous, and when it comes to Damon, I think they’re downright heroic for hunting him.
I haven’t given much thought to Kayla Ewell as an actress before, but she blew me away this episode. Her breakdown at the end with Stefan was so poignant and heartbreaking. Also, props to the writers: It would have been very easy for the writers to make Vicki an unlikable character (and I think she was for the first few episodes, in the never-ending Tyler-Jeremy triangle) or a two-dimensional “stoner slut,” but she was a very sympathetic character by the end, even before the vamping. I’m glad we got the bitterness about Matt’s bright future that you told me was coming, and the brief details about her mother always being at her boyfriend’s explain a lot with very little. I’m really glad she resisted human blood and was afraid of becoming a monster, and I think she might have just let herself die if Logan hadn’t died right in front of her; as it was, I don’t blame her at all for succumbing when there was a bloody corpse right in front of her. In a few short episodes Vicki changed from a character I had to put up with into a character I wanted to watch, and I’m really glad.
If you ignore the fact that he’s psycho, Damon and Vicki dancing around the mansion was adorable.
The other actress who blew me away was Nina Dobrev, and not even because she pulled off a doppelganger well, although that was good, too. Elena’s confusion and pain and fear when she confronted Stefan at the beginning and throughout the episode were palpable. In the scene in the bathroom where Elena is probably wondering if/hoping that she’s imagined the whole thing, she looked so wan and scared and exactly how I would expect someone to look in her situation. I love that Elena wasn’t suddenly “totes cool” with vampires and that she listened to her instincts to get away from it all when she couldn’t deal with the revelations. My only complaint was when she drove off to the middle of nowhere with Stefan to look at his old house (not sensible to be alone with a dangerous vampire!), but at least the show lampshaded it. And I guess I can’t say that I might not do the same in her position, since she did really like the guy and he had shown every sign of protecting her.
Paul Wesley was great in the opening scene when Elena confronted Stefan, after he had just found Zach’s body. You could see tears in his eyes. I’m glad Stefan was being proactive in this episode, even though he kind of fails at everything.
Damon saved him at the end! I have to say, so far I’m not really seeing the awesomesauce brotherliness that everyone adores, but I’m starting to see the potential for it.
The flashbacks did not interest me nearly as much as I thought they would. In fact I thought they were kind of…boring? It all just seems a little trite- Sexy Girl is Evil and selfishly wants both brothers; the brothers are too lusty to realize what a two-faced bitch she is, even though she isn’t being remotely subtle about playing them against each other; boys can’t resist Sexy Evil Girl and it ends badly, blah blah blah… We’ve heard so much about Katherine and the love triangle (or maybe I’ve just heard too much through fandom osmosis), that I felt like I already knew everything that was happening. There were no surprises (except for the boys’ awful hair). The one thing I liked was that she slept with both of them for ages and mind-controlled them not to tell; it’s nice (maybe delusional) to think that the brothers wouldn’t have betrayed each other like that if she hadn’t made them. At least we got Damon & Elena tension and their simmering barbs as a result of the flashbacks (Stefan didn’t tell her the whole story, did Damon thank Katherine, etc.).
I like the vampire mythology about siring. It’s interesting that you need to die after you have vampire blood in you (and I wonder if there’s a science to it, if there’s a certain amount you have to ingest, like if there have been times before when Damon tried to turn somebody and it turned out they hadn’t drunk enough vamp blood and they simply died). One thing that confuses me is, does the vamp need to have sucked your blood beforehand? Frex, if Damon had never fed on Vicki before giving her his blood and breaking her neck, would she still have turned into a vampire? Do all humans get high on vamp blood (like V on True Blood) or just ones who have been fed on?

Date: 2011-11-18 04:37 am (UTC)And it just gets better. I'm never going to not be impressed at her acting abilities. I 100% believe Elena and Katherine are two different people while I'm watching, and even without context clues it's usually pretty easy to identify which one she's playing just by the tone of her voice or the way she's carrying herself (or the Curls of Doom, but that comes later.).
Yep. As long as the person has some sort of vampire blood in their system when they die, they become a vampire.

Thanks for the clarification!
