Meme #2:
Which TV shows did you start watching in 2011?

Supernatural (still in S2), TVD (still in S1), Arrested Development (watched it through twice), Community (still in S1).  I’m technically still watching Ringer and Once Upon A Time, although I’m behind on both of them and feel little motivation to catch up on either.  I started Miranda, although I didn’t finish S1 (b/c I lost track of it, not because I lost interest).  I’ve also watched the first two episodes of Parks and Recreation, but so far I am unimpressed (blasphemy, I know).  :/

(Does it take a while to get into P&R?  It’s amusing, but most of the time I feel like I’m laughing at Leslie Knope in a mean, “she’s so naïve” way, and I don’t like that.)

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2011?

Well, I tried Up All Night and New Girl and was very disappointed with both of them, so I gave those up (might still watch the latter if I’m really, really bored).  Technically I gave up Glee in Fall 2010, but I didn’t even try S3 this year.  I also “let go” of Hank Azaria and ASH’s Free Agents, but that was involuntary.  :(

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2011? Why?

Pam AmDeep Space Nine.  Didn’t have time.

Which TV shows do you intend to check out in 2012?

Deep Space Nine.  Maybe Pam Am, depending on if it gets renewed.  Going to watch Downton Abbey as soon as I give S1 to my mother for Christmas and can open it.  I really, really want to watch Jason Isaacs’s Awake, so I hope NBC doesn’t crap out on me.  Maybe I'll start The West Wing if I get through SPN, TVD, and DS9.  I'm also going to watch Game of Thrones after I read the books, but I don't know when that will be.

Which TV show impressed you least in 2011?

Ringer.  Castle has also been disappointing me because the will-they-won't-they is becoming seriously contrived- don't mimic Hart Hanson, Andrew Marlowe!!

Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2012 unless things significantly improve?

I don’t think I can let go of anything that I’m regularly watching, no matter how much Bones and HIMYM try my patience.  I don't know if I'll watch more of P&R or move past S1 of Community.  I might give up Once Upon A Time.

Which TV show impressed you the most in 2011? Why?

Hmmm.  I was very impressed by S3 of Castle in the beginning of 2011, and since then it has gone downhill.  I was also very impressed by S6 of HIMYM in the beginning of 2011 b/c they handled the storylines of Barney and Marshall’s dads so well.  I’m back to being unimpressed, though.  I am super impressed by TVD S1.  Oh, and Arrested Development is actually the best thing since sliced bread.

Which TV shows do you think you'll never let go of no matter how crappy they get? Why?

HIMYM, Bones, and The Big Bang Theory.  They all try my patience in different ways, but I’ve been with them for so long that I’m going to stick it out TO THE BITTER END.  TBBT still amuses me when it’s not being misogynistic, and I still enjoy watching the characters on HIMYM, even if my enthusiasm for their arcs has long since waned.  I can’t actually tell you why I’m still watching Bones, though, because I dislike most of the characters and think the writing is stupid.  I guess it’s the pregnancy.  TO THE BITTER END.

Shows I watched and loved that aren't mentioned on this list because I started them in another year

The Guild S5.  I rewatched a few episodes/scenes from BtVS, AtS, and Friends.

Parks and Rec is one of those rare cases where the first season is pretty crappy but it picks up fast in season 2. Trust me. It's the best comedy since Arrested Development. I know I say that about 30 Rock too, but Parks and Rec is beleaguered and little watched, just like Arrested Development was, so it's got a lot in common. I promise you'll fall in love with Leslie Knope. And actually really fall in love with her main squeeze, Ben Wyatt. My response to relatives asking if I have a boyfriend this Christmas? "I'm saving myself for Ben Wyatt."

For the meme, give me your Season 1 TVD thoughts!

I'm just seconding everything that was said about P&R. It only gets better. I watched the first couple episodes when they aired and didn't like it, but last year I ended up trying again and watched the whole thing (but S3 especially) like this:

Glad it gets better and that I'm not the only one who had difficulty with the first few episodes! (I was seriously wondering, am I going to be a pariah for not liking this show?)

All right, I guess I'll give it another try if I need something to watch during lunch next semester. That's good to know that S2 is a lot better than S1.

Ooh, I was hoping someone would ask me TVD!

Give me a fandom and I'll answer the following:
Favorite character: Elena or Damon
Least Favorite character: John
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Anna/Jeremy, Alaric/Jenna, Elena/Damon, Tyler/Caroline, Elena/Stefan
Character I find most attractive: Alaric!
Character I would marry: Alaric
Character I would be best friends with: Elena
a random thought: I still cannot believe how suddenly and unexpectedly Pearl was killed. I feel Jossed. It's excellent and sad all at once.
An unpopular opinion: I don't like Katherine so far. If she has any redeeming qualities, I have yet to see them.
my canon OTP: Hmm. Anna/Jeremy? I dunno, there's no romantic pairing I'm very passionate about.
Non-canon OTP: Well, I don't know about S3, but they're certainly not canon in S1, so Elena/Damon.
most badass character: Anna
pairing I am not a fan of: Matt/Caroline
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I don't think any characters have been written poorly enough yet for anyone to be "screwed up." However, I would have liked more explicit rationale for why Elena warmed up to Damon, and if I know my fandom osmosis correctly, I really don't like what eventually happens to Jenna.
favorite friendship: Damon and Alaric! (even if they themselves wouldn't call it 'friendship')
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: I would like to take Tyler away from his awful, awful parents.

Give me a fandom and I'll answer the following:
Favorite character: Dean
Least Favorite character: Gordon
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): 5, LOL. Like I could pick 5 ships for this show. Um. Dean/Jo. Oh wait, THE STARKS. DON AND MAGGIE FOREVER. Dean & Sam (no Wincest!).
Character I find most attractive: Dean
Character I would marry: Dean. Or Sam.
Character I would be best friends with: Jo
a random thought: I would probably be okay with Sam/Jo, too, but I think it would always weird me out a little because of all the flirting and initial UST between Jo and Dean.
An unpopular opinion: I don't know if this is unpopular or not, but I don't want angels and God and Hell to come into play. Bah humbug.
my canon OTP: Dean & Sam
Non-canon OTP: Dean/Jo
most badass character: Dean
pairing I am not a fan of: Dean/Sam.
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I think I'm not going to like what happens to Jo. Not. At. All.
favorite friendship: Dean & Sam
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: I want to adopt both boys and give them home-cooked meals and warm beds and my mom's baked goods but especially Dean.

snickfic: Buffy looking over her shoulder (Dean)

I am really glad/relieved that after seeing the whole show, your enthusiasm for Dean is as strong as ever! :D

Well. He has made me VERY UPSET a couple of times, and he is not the same insecure goof that he was in, say, S1. (I've been rewatching S1, and the boys are both so adorable back then.) He's changed some over the course of the series. But yes, I still love him.

Oh, also, wishing that God and the angels didn't show up isn't an unpopular opinion. I wish it, too, even though it'd mean I'd get no Castiel. Or several other characters that are really quite fab, in and of themselves.

From: [identity profile] gryfndor-godess.livejournal.com
I thought maybe it wasn't unpopular, but I didn't know for sure. I'm a little conflicted because in theory I do want there to be balance- if the demons are literally demons from Hell, then there should be angels and Heaven to balance it out. But I'd really just prefer that the there was none of it; that the demons were not biblical demons but demons like on BtVS (i.e., they're monsters and 'demons' is just a catch-all name for them).

snickfic: Buffy looking over her shoulder (Default)

Well, yes. The fact that they're very clearly dealing with semi-Biblical demons in the first couple of seasons (and the becomes even more explicit in a particular ep in S3) meant that the writers pretty much wrote themselves with respect to angels. I mean, they didn't *have* to include them, but their lack becomes more glaring as time goes on.

I will say that I, personally, am not necessarily opposed to all fictional angels everywhere; I specifically really dislike how they deal with these angels, and with the theology that ends up being implied by their opinions and actions.

I suppose I'm not opposed on principle, either, but I've had very few satisfactory experiences with angels in fiction.

Yes. I will agree with you there. Um, Neil Gaiman wrote one in Neverwhere that I didn't mind overmuch, but I suspect that was largely because it was Neil Gaiman doing it. Also I like Clarence fine in It's a Wonderful Life, even though he puts angels about on par with Tinkerbell in terms of dignity.

From: [identity profile] gryfndor-godess.livejournal.com
I've only seen It's A Wonderful Life once, but I think I liked the angel (I don't remember enough to comment on dignity, but his general kindliness and care for people is how I view angels). I liked Touched By An Angel when I was little. Other than that I've read a few YA books about angels (which are the current creature du jour in YA fantasy, I think), but those generally left me with the impression that the author was exploiting the source material to enable angsty, forbidden love.

Oh Bones. It's okay, I can't stop watching it either. And I have no idea why. That's a lie. It's because I want to see them with a baby. Yep.

For the meme, Arrested Development! Also, I'm stealing it.

Date: 2011-12-22 03:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gryfndor-godess.livejournal.com
Yup, the baby is pretty much my only rational reason for still watching. It has the potential to be very adorable. However, if they contrive to then break Bones and Booth up again for Sweeps Week or the finale, I shall be enraged.

Give me a fandom and I'll answer the following:
Favorite character: Oh, that is so difficult! I don't think I can choose between Michael, Lucille, and Maeby
Least Favorite character: Tobias
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): George Michael/Maeby. Ummm. There aren't any other ships I'm that excited by, although I'm not averse to Lucille/Oscar or Lucille/George Sr. I like the Buster/Lucille 2 and Michael/Rita storylines while they're happening (although I'm glad they're resolved). I feel weird admitting it, but I think the Michael/Lindsay stuff in the finale is hilarious.
Character I find most attractive: Michael
Character I would marry: Michael
Character I would be best friends with: Maeby
a random thought: I just remembered Michael/Marta for the above 'ship' question. I liked the way they developed but not the way they ended with Michael and Gob acting so childishly.
An unpopular opinion: I enjoy Lindsay as part of the ensemble, but I don't care much about her individually.
my canon OTP: George Michael/Maeby
Non-canon OTP: Umm umm umm, I don't think I have one? I don't even know what qualifies as a non-canon OTP for this show.
most badass character: Maeby
pairing I am not a fan of: Michael/Maggie Lizer
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Hmm, probably Tobias. Sometimes he's amusing, but most of the time the stupidity goes too far and I just want to cringe.
favorite friendship: Michael and Lindsay
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: LOL, I do not think it would be in my best interests to be adopted by the Bluth family. I'd adopt Maeby into my family.

I also “let go” of Hank Azaria and ASH’s Free Agents, but that was involuntary.

OH!! ME TOO!! I didn't ever see any promotion for it. Then I found the first couple episodes on demand and fell in love with it. Then found out it got the can... :( ASH cracked me up!

I say keep on trucking with Parks & Rec and Community, I consider them the funniest things since Arrested Development, and I don't think I'm alone in that opinion. P&R didn't really captivate me until the middle of season 2, but season 1 is so short that it doesn't take long to get there. And Community really got me at episodes 9-the rest of it. So yeah.

for the meme how about HIMYM?

Date: 2011-12-22 06:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gryfndor-godess.livejournal.com
FA was surprisingly good! The trailers hadn't impressed me, even though I like Hank Azaria, and the main reason I gave it a shot was because ASH looked so funny. But then once I watched the show, I actually liked the other characters and the story, and, well, then it was gone. :( I loved seeing ASH play that kind of character.

General consensus seems to be that I should give P&R until S2. Good to know!

Ooh, HIMYM!
Give me a fandom and I'll answer the following:
Favorite character: Ted
Least Favorite character: Zoe. Out of the main cast, though, I have the least patience for Barney.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Ted/Robin, Lily/Marshall, Barney/Robin, Ted/Barney, S1 Ted/Victoria
Character I find most attractive: On a purely physical level, NPH, but Barney's womanizing is so repulsive that I have a hard time viewing him as attractive on the show. Ted appeals to me most in personality, and I think Josh Radnor is pretty hot, too.
Character I would marry: I'd be happy to be the mother. *g*
Character I would be best friends with: Marshall
a random thought: I was an enthusiastic Barney/Robin shipper until "The Rough Patch" and all the other contrived crap the writers pulled in S5. I'd still be happy if they were together, but now I'm mostly apathetic and even a little conflicted because I know Robin won't have children but I want Barney to be a father.
An unpopular opinion: I think Ted and Robin were wonderful together and could have made it work for the long-haul. I really dislike the recent retcons about their relationship (such as flashbacks in S5 or S6 indicating that Ted thought she was too independent).
my canon OTP: Ted/Robin.
Non-canon OTP: Ted/Barney. I would also be amused by Lily/Barney because she wouldn't put up with his shenanigans.
most badass character: Robin
pairing I am not a fan of: Robin/Don WHAT WAS THAT SHIT UGH.
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): They started screwing with both Robin and Barney in S5 when they were dating and they haven't really stopped. They have both gone through some really great growth since then (such as Barney and his dad, which was wonderfully executed), but it hasn't been consistent. Ted was also an ass in S6 with Zoe.
favorite friendship: Ted and Marshall
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: If I were going to be adopted by TV parents, I think Marshall and Lily would make great ones.

Date: 2011-12-22 06:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nvrbnkisst.livejournal.com
But then once I watched the show, I actually liked the other characters and the story, and, well, then it was gone. :( I loved seeing ASH play that kind of character.

I absolutely loved ASH in that type of roll as well. And I was pleasantly surprised by the characters. They all had seemingly great chemistry and the story wasn't so contrived to the point of the 'will they, won't they' aspect of it being cliche'd. I dunno, I miss it :(

I love that you would be best friends with Marshall! I think I would too. A friend and I were actually just talking about Jason Segel the other day, saying that we find him incredibly attractive/awesome but almost feel like it's too attractive/awesome that it borders on being creepy. And that just makes us like him more... lol I dunno.

I agree with all your Barney/Robin thoughts. *nods* I miss their bromance actually.

I would also be amused by Lily/Barney because she wouldn't put up with his shenanigans.

you also know Lily would be totally into trying that out lol. I love their friendship :)

Robin/Don WHAT WAS THAT SHIT UGH.

OMG AGREED!!!

Marshall & Lily would make great parents!

Date: 2011-12-22 07:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gryfndor-godess.livejournal.com
Jason Segel is so attractive! He's the kind of guy where physically he doesn't do much for me, but once you see him perform and realize how talented he is, he becomes really attractive. It's funny how similar he is to Marshall, and yet I can separate them pretty easily in my mind- and still like both of them a lot!

I miss their bromance actually.

If they don't end up together, I really hope they at least get back to that comfort level. :/

Marshall & Lily would make great parents!

I can't wait until that baby is born! I'm even more excited now that we know AH is actually pregnant.
