Following Belle and Rapunzel, Mulan is my favorite Disney heroine. This hardly bears an explanation given the very premise of the movie. What else do I love about her besides her courage and determination? I love that she’s playing it all by ear, that her initial motivation is not bravery per se but sheer, unflinching resolve to protect her father. Mulan doesn’t worry about silly societal consequences or the danger she faces; in her mind, protecting her father or warning Shang about the Huns is the only thing to do; it’s not even a question. She kicks ass both figuratively and literally and is indisputably one of Disney’s greatest heroines.
