1x03: Friday Night Bites
-I love the star tattoo on Caroline’s foot; it says a lot to me about her character that she would get such a cute and simple design on such a random place- that she’s whimsical, headstrong, sensible, a dreamer, etc. I love how brave she is, despite being terrified, and how she tries to fight Damon. Except for the male-gazey opening shot of her breasts, this opening was fantastic. I think that if I hadn’t already known that Caroline didn’t stand a chance, I would have been legitimately freaked out.
-Why does Elena keep going on about how great a guy Stefan is? Hasn’t she known him for like a week?
-I like the exchange between Matt and Tyler on the school lawn when Tyler tries to be a supportive best friend. If I ignore the fact that he tried to assault Vick in the pilot, I can almost like Tyler.
-Wait, is the jerkass history teacher also the football coach?
-Elena and Bonnie’s conversation in the kitchen before dinner is cheesy, but it reminds me of the way my best friends and I joke about stuff together. The friendship between the girls seems wonderfully genuinely.
-Oh look, Stefan, your secrets could hurt your girlfriend because by hiding the fact that you’re a vampire, Elena thinks it’s okay to invite your psychotic brother into the house! Maybe you should tell her the truth, hmm?
-The conversation in the kitchen between Damon and Elena is nifty. I love how clever Elena is at deducing the Stefan/Katherine/Damon triangle. Ian totally checked out her ass when she moved to the island, which is a nice staying-in-character moment.
-AAAAHHHHH, ELENA SAYING SHE’S SORRY ABOUT KATHERINE AND DAMON BEING SHELL-SHOCKED.
-Okay I’m three episodes in, and I kind of ship Delena.
-Oh, I love Caroline for laughing at Damon’s suggestion that she go help in the kitchen.
-Woh-hoh-hoh, Damon can affect Elena’s dreams?
-Voice-over, BLURGH. You want to protect Elena, Stefan? Telling her the truth would be a good first step.
-“I’m sorry I make you uncomfortable. That isn’t my intention.” “Yes it is. Otherwise you wouldn’t put an alternate meaning behind everything you say.” ELENA IS AWESOME.
-I cracked up when Elena slapped Damon.
-Aw, Matt is such a decent person. I really like him.
-I love Stefan’s speech about Damon’s love for Katherine being his humanity. It echoes Angelus’s claims in BtVS that love = humanity.
-OH. Didn’t see that death coming.
Overall:
-Elena and Stefan are cute, and I want to like him, but it really, really bugs me that he’s lying to her. I didn’t like it when Angel hid the truth either, but considering what an isolationist he had been up until then and soul dichotomy (i.e., Buffy thinks vampire = evil, end of story), I could understand why he didn’t know how or whether to broach the topic with Buffy; I also think the circumstances are mitigating in his case because his secret wasn’t directly putting Buffy in danger, whereas Stefan’s secret outright endangers Elena.
-I like the slow build-up we’re getting of Bonnie’s powers. Kat Graham is great at showing Bonnie’s fear and confusion as her powers grow.
-I want to hug Caroline and beat Damon with a stick. :(
-Matt is awesome.
-The girls’ friendship makes me happy.
-Damon and Elena’s scenes together are stellar. I love that she recognizes his bullshit and calls him on it. I love that she tried to be nice about Katherine in the kitchen, even though she could tell he was being creepy. I love that she surprises him. I get the feeling that he’s genuinely attracted to her because of Katherine (instead of just stalking her to mess with Stefan) and that he hates it, and I love that.
Everyone says that the first six episodes suck, but I have to say that except for the football stuff (which I would normally be apathetic about but am irked by now because of the Penn State bullshit), I thought this episode was excellent. It was entertaining, shocking, and had some really nice characterization.

I don't really remember her saying that?
Tyler grows on you.
Wait, is the jerkass history teacher also the football coach?
lol. yep.
Okay I’m three episodes in, and I kind of ship Delena.
Baha, I thought you shipped them in the S2 finale? But anyway, yeah, this was the first ep in which I thought D/E might not be terrible. THEIR KITCHEN SCENE OMG. Also, Elena slaps Damon A LOT. IT'S AWESOME.
Agreed about Stefan's constant lying. It makes me hate early E/S kind of a lot. Oh well, they get better.

Date: 2011-11-12 03:17 am (UTC)It upped the ante of Damon's villainy really well, first with Caroline, then with him actively harassing Elena, and then killing Tanner. Also, the characters are branching out in how/with whom they interact (frex, E, S, D, B, and C all at dinner together), which helps.
She says variations of it several times to Bonnie when she's trying to convince her to come to dinner. She also tells Stefan that Bonnie, Matt, and the football people will realize what a great guy he is, etc., once they get to know him.
I suspected he would. I've heard that Caroline/Tyler is adorable, and anyone who makes Caroline happy makes me happy.
Thanks! I did figure that one out eventually. I was writing those thoughts in real time, like live-blogging...I should remember to clarify which questions end up being rhetorical.
I think I did, but that's like...future shipping. I did not expect to ship them so chronologically early in the series. :D
SO GOOD.

Date: 2011-11-12 05:30 am (UTC)I'm doing all Internet things on my phone for at least a week or so while I'm at my grandparent's (who don't have a connection), so I can't leave a detailed comment, but yes to you're thoughts. :)

THIS IS THE BEST PART OF SEASON 1!!!! I love these three girls and how close they are.
Okay I’m three episodes in, and I kind of ship Delena
I think you're supposed to begin shipping Delena this early on, but you're uncomfortable with it because Damon can be such an ass but THE CHEMISTRY! THE CHEMISTRY!
Matt is awesome.
3x05 is a GREAT Matt episode. Something to look forwards to!
I want to hug Caroline and beat Damon with a stick. :(
EXACTLY. And this is why you're uncomfortable shipping Delena this early! But I think you're supposed to be at least fascinated by Damon, even if you think he's a jerkface.
All in all YOU'RE HAVING THE RIGHT REACTIONS! YAY!

Date: 2011-11-13 04:58 am (UTC)It is so very great. I think the writers are definitely pushing Stelena, too, though; the cutesiness is just so genuine- which is why I can stomach it, even if it does make me roll my eyes.
3x05 is what I'm scheduled to watch tomorrow, so yay!
Oh, I am definitely fascinated by him. I don't think I would call him my favorite character (that would feel unfair to the ladies, who are just all so excellent), but he is definitely the character I most enjoy watching on-screen. Ian Somerhalder is extremely talented at playing up the sarcasm, charm, and brutality. Also, Damon gets the best lines.
